Visiting the Sahara in Morocco: Start with the Right Route

A Sahara trip is easier to plan when you choose the departure city, the dune region and the city where the journey ends before choosing a tour length. A two-day visit to a desert gateway and a multi-day trip with a dune camp night are different experiences. This page helps you find the relevant departure hub; the actual itinerary and included services are established on the tour page or in a written quote.

Choose a departure city first

From Marrakech, compare published routes toward Zagora, Merzouga and Erg Chigaga in our Sahara tours from Marrakech hub. If your trip begins in Casablanca, start with the Casablanca desert tour comparison and allow for the additional city-to-desert journey. For a departure in Fes, use the Sahara journey enquiry from Fes: its route and final city must be agreed for your dates.

Separate a dune night from a desert gateway stop

Ouarzazate can be a useful southbound stop, but its name alone does not confirm a night among the dunes. Agafay near Marrakech is a different landscape from the Sahara dune regions. Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, or an Erg Chigaga route, require different travel plans. Ask where the overnight accommodation is, how you reach it and how much time remains there after the road transfer.

For examples of distinct published itineraries, compare the four-day Marrakech to Fes tour via Merzouga with the five-day Marrakech to Erg Chigaga tour. Their departure and final cities and overnight sequences differ. The desert-night checklist explains which camp and transfer details to confirm; it does not assume every itinerary uses the same accommodation.

Check the travel days as well as the destination

A tour name can hide a long first or last transfer. Read the overnight city for each day and note when the itinerary reaches the dunes. If the last night is far from your airport or next hotel, the final departure may be earlier than you expect. A route that finishes in another city may save a return drive, but it also changes the place where you need onward transport.

When you request a private route, state the stops you most want and the maximum daily driving you can accept. Ask the operator to show where a shorter route would replace dune time with a gateway stop, or where an extra night would improve the pace. Tour names and photographs are useful starting points; the dated day-by-day plan determines what you can actually book.

Use the three guides for different decisions

Send your dates, number of travelers, preferred departure and finish cities, desired dune region and any mobility or accommodation requirements through the contact page. Request the overnight sequence, inclusions and total price in writing before booking onward travel.
