Planning Seven Days in Merzouga and Erg Lihoudi

Camel caravan crossing orange sand dunes under a blue sky

This seven-day journey from Marrakech visits two separate dune areas: Erg Chebbi at Merzouga and Erg Lihoudi near M’hamid. Between them, the published route follows the Drâa Valley and spends a night near the Agdez palm grove. It is useful to plan the week as a sequence of different overnight stops, rather than as one continuous desert stay. Check the full seven-day Merzouga and Zagora itinerary for the operator’s current terms.

Follow the overnight sequence

Day one crosses the High Atlas and Ounila Valley, with Telouet and Aït Benhaddou on the listed route. The night is at a hotel near the kasbah. Day two continues by Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Dadès area toward a Moroccan inn in Tinghir. These first two nights provide a different setting from the later camps; keep a few things accessible for short visits along the way.

On day three, the itinerary passes the Todgha gorges and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga. The offer describes a sunset camel trek at Erg Chebbi and a camp night with toilets and showers. Day four leaves the camp for Alnif, Tazarin and Nkob, then ends at a guesthouse near the Agdez palm grove. This guesthouse night separates the two dune stays.

Day five goes through Zagora and Tamegroute to Erg Lihoudi near M’hamid, where the offer lists a night under a nomadic tent. Day six returns through Tagounite and the Drâa Valley, with a visit to the Kasbah of Tamnougalt before an overnight stay in Ouarzazate. Day seven crosses the Atlas back to Marrakech, with arrival expected at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Prepare questions for each camp

The Merzouga camp and the Erg Lihoudi camp are different stops, with an Agdez guesthouse in between. The itinerary gives explicit shower and toilet information for the Merzouga night, but does not describe the Erg Lihoudi facilities in the same detail. Before booking, ask what each tent provides, where washing facilities are located, and whether your main luggage remains with the vehicle or travels to the camp. That helps you decide what to place in a smaller overnight bag.

The included list names 4×4 transport with driver, accommodation with Moroccan breakfasts and dinners, a Sahara camel ride, local guides where specified, and tea breaks at local homes. Lunches and personal drinks appear in the excluded list. Confirm the exact arrangements and any additional visit costs for your dates from the offer, especially if you need dietary or mobility accommodations.

Allow for a route with several transitions

This is a week with mountain travel, kasbah stops, two dune areas, a palm-grove guesthouse and an Ouarzazate overnight. Discuss the pickup location at your Marrakech accommodation and the realistic pace of the long transfer days. If a preferred visit matters more than an extra roadside stop, make that clear when confirming the plan. The Merzouga and Erg Lihoudi packing guide covers what to keep handy across the two camp nights.
